The Practice of Recovery
The Power of Truth, Surrender and Action
If you are beginning the first
steps to freedom, the words powerless and
unmanageable couldn't possibly describe you.
You are quite certain there are others
who long ago lost the ability to control
their addictions, but you are not one of them.
You need freedom from nothing.
Maybe you only drink on the weekends.
Maybe you only drink on special occasions.
You're overly cautious and wouldn't
think of driving while drunk.
You've held the same job for twenty
years and haven't once urinated on yourself.
You function quite well thank you,
and wish people would stop looking
for problems where there are none.
Or
You can't even begin to disguise your illness.
Maybe you get drunk every day.
Maybe you haven't held a meaningful
job or conversation in decades.
You don't remember what the summer
sun feels like on your sleeveless arms or
that distinctive smell of spring or the
rusty hues that usher in another autumn.
Maybe you don't remember because you are
holed up in the squalor that is your existence.
These are two very different scenarios with
many lives falling somewhere in between.
The problem with the disease of addiction
is that if you have it, it will tell you again
and again that you do not in spite of an inner
knowing and all evidence to the contrary.
You are willing to wager away your family
and your very life that it just isn't so.
